How would you like to build a fairy house out of wood? This
project is simple enough for kids to complete, but requires some advanced
carpentry skills.
Woodworking has
become a hobby for many people around the globe. Whether you want to create
something practical or decorative, building furniture from scratch is a great
way to get started. In this video tutorial, I'll show you how to build a wooden
fairy house.
This project is
perfect for beginners who want to try their hand at woodworking. The
instructions are clear and concise, and the finished piece looks beautiful. If

- Start with a base of plywood
1. Plywood
Plywood is a type of
wood panel that is composed of thin sheets of hardwood glued together. It is
commonly used in construction projects due to its durability, ease of use, and
low cost. Plywood comes in different types, thicknesses, and finishes. You can
choose between solid, veneer, or particle board. Solid plywood is thicker than
veneer and particle boards. Veneer plywood is thinner than solid plywood and is
often used for furniture making. Particle board is cheaper than veneer plywood
and is commonly used for home improvement projects.
2. Screws
Screws are metal
fasteners that are used to attach two pieces of material together. There are
many types of screws, including drywall screws, lag bolts, sheet metal screws,
and decking screws. Drywall screws are used for attaching drywall to studs. Lag
bolts are used for securing concrete slabs. Sheet metal screws are used for
attaching sheet metal to framing. Decking screws are used for attaching decking
to framing.
3. Wood glue
Wood glue is a
mixture of water and resin that is used to adhere wood together. It is commonly
applied using brushes, sprayers, or rollers. Wood glue dries clear and is ideal
for finishing work.
4. Hammer
A hammer is a tool
used to drive nails or other objects into wood. A claw hammer is a variation of
a hammer that has a curved head instead of a flat head. A claw hammer is useful
for driving nails into soft materials like foamboard.
5. Nails
Nails are small metal
pins that have sharp points at each end. They are used to hold things together.
Common types of nails include brad nails, finish nails, and galvanized nails.
Brad nails are short and wide and are used for general purpose applications.
Finish nails are longer and narrower and are used for finishing work.
Galvanized nails are coated with zinc to prevent corrosion.
6. Drill
Drills are tools that
create holes in wood. Drills come in various sizes and shapes depending on
their intended application. Common drills include spade bits, twist bits, and
countersink bits. Spade bits are used for drilling shallow holes. Twist bits
are used for drilling holes with a spiral shape. Countersink bits are used for
creating counterbores.
7. Saw
Saws are cutting
tools that cut wood into specific shapes. Saws come in different types,
including circular saws, band saws, jigsaws, table saws, and sabre saws.
Circular saws are used for cutting circles out of wood. Band saws are used for
crosscutting lumber. Jigsaws are used for cutting intricate patterns into wood.
Table saws are used for slicing wood into precise lengths. Sabre saws are used
for making straight cuts.
- Cut out the shape of the house using a jigsaw
1. Cut out the shape of the fairy house using a jigsaw. You
need to cut out the shape of the roof first. Then, cut out the sides of the
house. Make sure to leave enough space between each side of the house.
2. Use wood glue to
attach the pieces together. Let dry completely before moving on to the next
step.
3. Sand down any
rough edges and smooth out the surface.
4. Paint the entire
house white.
5. Once the paint
dries, use sandpaper to remove any excess paint.
6. Apply two coats of
clear sealer to protect the house.
7. Add some finishing
touches to the house.
- Sand down any rough edges
1. Sanding
Sanding is a great
way to smooth out wood surfaces and make them look nice and clean. You can sand
anything from furniture to toys, and even your own body! There are many
different types of sandpaper, each designed for a specific purpose. Here we’ll
go over how to use some of the most popular ones.
2. Woodworking
sanders
Woodworking sanders
are great for smoothing out small pieces of wood. These tools have a wide range
of grit sizes, from fine (80-grit) to extra coarse (150-grit). A sander with a
coarser grit will work faster than a finer one, but may take longer to finish.
3. Random orbital
sander
Random orbit sanders
are great for larger projects where you need to get into tight spaces. These
tools have a variable speed motor, making them ideal for quick sanding.
4. Power sander
Power sanders are
great for finishing off smaller projects. They’re fast and powerful, making
them perfect for removing scratches and imperfections.
5. Drum sanders
Drum sanders are
similar to power sanders, except they don’t have a variable speed motor.
Instead, drum sanders have a continuous belt that spins at a constant rate.
Drum sanders are good for smoothing out large areas.
6. Belt sander
Belt sanders are
great for general household tasks. They’re compact and lightweight, making them
easy to move around the house.
7. Handheld
drill/driver
Handheld drills are
great for drilling holes in wood. They’re lightweight and portable, making them
perfect for DIY projects.
- Stain the wood
1. Stain the wood
You need to stain the
wood before you start making the fairy house. You can use any kind of wood
stain that you want, but I recommend using Minwax's Polyurethane Wood Finish.
It is inexpensive and comes in different colors.
2. Sanding
After staining the
wood, sand it down until it is smooth. Use 120-grit sandpaper if you have a
belt sander or 220-grit sandpaper otherwise.
3. Painting
Now paint the entire
surface of the wood with white primer. Make sure that you apply enough coats of
primer to cover the entire surface of the wooden piece. Let each coat dry
completely before applying the next one. Once the primer dries, apply two coats
of acrylic paint. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the
following coat. When both coats of paint are dry, let the piece sit overnight.
4. Stenciling
Use stencils to
create patterns on the painted fairy house. Cut out shapes from cardboard or
thick paper and tape them onto the painted surface. Remove the stencil once the
design is complete.
5. Finishing touches
Once the design is
finished, add finishing details to make the fairy house look realistic. Paint
the nails black and glue some small pieces of wood onto the nails. Add a few
flowers and grass around the base of the fairy house.
- Paint the walls
1. Paint the walls
You will need paint
brushes, paint, and some paper towels. You will want to make sure that you have
enough room to move around while painting. Also, make sure that you have a good
ventilation system. If you don't have a venting system, then you may want to
consider using a fan to help keep the air circulating.
2. Cut out the shapes
Cut out the shapes
that you would like to use for the house. Make sure that they fit together well
and that they are not going to fall apart.
3. Sand down the
edges
Sand down the edges
of each shape until they are smooth. This will give them a nice finish.
4. Glue the pieces
together
Glue the pieces
together. Make sure that you glue the bottom piece first. Then glue the sides
and top piece onto the bottom piece.
5. Let dry
Let the pieces dry
overnight before moving on to the next step.
6. Stain the wood
Stain the wood if you
want. I chose to stain mine.
7. Add details
Add any details that
you want to add. I added flowers and vines.
- Finish by adding details like windows, doors, and roofing
1. Windows
Windows are a great
way to add natural lighting to your fairy house. You can use any type of window
you want, including glass, wood, or even plastic. Make sure to get a good size
window though, because they tend to be expensive.
2. Doors
Doorways are a great
way to make your fairy house look unique. You can use any door you want, but
make sure it's sturdy enough to hold up to the weather. If you don't have a
door yet, you can always build a small doorway out of sticks and branches.
3. Roofing
Roofing is a great
way to finish off your fairy house. You should choose a material that is
durable and weatherproof. Wood is a popular choice, but if you want something
different, you could try using corrugated tin or even cardboard.
In conclusion, making
a fairy house from scratch is a fun project for kids and adults alike!
